Nadi Parikshan

Nadi Parikshan Understanding Your Health Through The Wisdom Of Ayurveda

Personalized Ayurvedic Assessment at Sri Sri Ayurvedic Holistic Wellness & Panchkarma Centre.

Nadi Parikshan (Nadi Pariksha) is a traditional Ayurvedic practice of assessing the pulse performed by Ayurvedic Practitioners as part of understanding an individual’s Prakriti (natural constitution) and Vikriti (current state of imbalance).

At Sri Sri Ayurvedic Holistic Wellness & Panchkarma Centre Nadi Parikshan is one of the parts of the full Ayurvedic consultation. The test is evaluated together with your health history or lifestyle, diet, digestion, sleep, stress levels and other factors to determine your personal approach to wellness.

What is Nadi Parikshan?

The basic concept of this therapy is that every person has their own unique constitution which is based on the ratio of three Doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha.. It is an important aspect of maintaining health to keep the doshas in balance as per traditional Ayurvedic principles.

During the Nadi Parikshan the Ayurvedic practitioner gently assesses the pulse on the wrist. The characteristics of the pulse are interpreted in the context of other clinical and lifestyle indicators according to traditional Ayurvedic practices.

Nadi Parikshan is an Ayurvedic assessment and should not be substituted for appropriate diagnostic and laboratory tests or the evaluation and advice of qualified medical professionals if any such tests are indicated.

Understanding Vata, Pitta & Kapha

Vata is traditionally linked to movement, circulation and nervous-system activity. If these areas are out-of-balance according to Ayurvedic principles, there are certain factors that an Ayurvedic practitioner would review including routines, sleep, digestion, or restlessness.

Pitta governs transformation, metabolism and digestion and an Ayurvedic analysis would explore patterns around these areas, such as digestion, heat, sensitivity, and lifestyle.

Kapha is classically associated with structure, stability, nourishment, and strength. An Ayurvedic analysis would investigate factors such as heaviness, energy levels, digestion, and activity patterns.

The above-listed factors are part of a traditional Ayurvedic diagnostic tool used by practitioners to help understand an individual’s Ayurvedic profile.

Prakriti– A Personalized Approach

Prakriti is your natural constitution, determined by the dominant mix of the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha). According to Ayurveda, there are 7 types of Prakriti:

Vata type: associated with light, movement, creativity, erratic, active, variable days.

Pitta type: linked with fire, transformation, concentration, determination, and a focused mind.

Kapha type: linked with groundedness, strength, stability, calm, and consistent days.

Vata-Pitta: combination of the first two with Vata being more prominent.

Pitta-Kapha: combination of the second and the third with Pitta being more prominent.

Vata-Kapha: combination of the first and the third.

Tridoshic: all three doshas are in balance.

The Ayurvedic concept of Prakriti is generally considered to be a permanent constitution, although various factors like lifestyle, environment, and age can affect it.

Prakriti = Your Natural Constitution

Vikriti – A Personalized Approach

Vikriti, simply put, is your current state of the doshic imbalance, rather than your constitution. In the context of Ayurveda, Vikriti, for reference, is said to be changed throughout time based on things like diet, sleep, stress, lifestyle, weather, seasons, physical activity, and overall health.

An example of this in context would be having a Pitta-Kapha Prakriti but currently presenting with signs and symptoms an Ayurvedic practitioner would read as increased Vata. The wellness advisor would advise taking into account both the constitutional type along with the current imbalance.

What are the Different Types of Vikriti?

In practice, an Ayurvedic practitioner will generally consider current imbalances as mostly Vata, Pitta, or Kapha, or a combination of the above. As a more detailed analysis, the condition can be said to present more in line with two of the doshas or all of them at once.

Imbalances of the Vata dosha would conventionally present with irregular schedules, restlessness, dryness, fluctuating digestion, and sleep patterns.

Pitta would present with too much heat in the body, irritability, digestive discomfort, and skin sensitivities.

Kapha, on the other hand, would present with sluggishness, congestion, low motivation, and a slower metabolism.

These are the conventional presentations of imbalance in the Ayurvedic tradition, not to be mixed up with actual diagnoses. As such, each of the above can have a variety of physical causes.
